Earth Day 2008 Tue 22-Apr-2008

Probably a sad day for those who know what is all about. The Earth Day Network has a list of events and petitions, everybody is talking about “green” ways to live, but the truth is nothing has really changed since last year.

And it is more sad for me personally to see my country, Greece, this very day, getting kicked out of the Kioto protocol procedures, the first and only one out of 141 countries in the world. The reason is that the corresponding Greek ministry is unable to impose a proper and valid way to measure greenhouse gas emissions. As a result, Greece can no longer be part of the “CO2 market” that regulates who can “export” its excessive CO2 emissions, mostly to poorer and undeveloped countries.

And on top of that, more and more “smart” countries start thinking seriously about abandoning fossil fuel and turning (again) to nuclear power for their needs. Two decades after turning our backs to massive nuclear power plants, the same fear comes back to haunt us again. Not a great sign of progress for humanity.

The CO2 and other greenhouse gas emissions is not a trade, it is waste. As soon as the countries do not realize that, we just end up with just Earth Days with a lot of hopes and a lot of disappointments.
